The RHI provides a great environment for research.

Independent Research Fellows

We have a great record of hosting IRFs who have excelled and stayed on to build their own research groups in Sheffield. If you have IRF funding and would like to move to the Robert Hill Institute, or if you are interested in applying for IRF funding to establish your research group at the Robert Hill, contact us. We provide extensive support for IRFs (e.g., Marie Curie fellowships, ERC, Royal Society, RCUK fellowships), both during the application process and afterwards.

We are keen to hear from prospective PhD interested in joining any of our research teams. We provide an outstanding environment for research training, with competitive studentships available from NERC and BBSRC on an annual basis. Prospective PhD students with their own funding are urged to contact the appropriate research group leader. Contact us!

All members of the Robert Hill Institute are embedded within the biology departments of the University of Sheffield where research-led teaching is core. As a biology undergraduate you will have exensive opportunities during your degree to perform research projects in the areas covered by the Robert Hill, as well as the possibility of summer studentships which provide hands-on research experience. Whatever your interests, studying at either the Department of Animal & Plant Sciences or Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology provides an excellent route to a research career in plant science. The departments run frequent open days linked to the UCAS application process. Come and see us!
